Materials for staircase renovation and floors

PVC slabs, rigid PVC, laminate and solid oak side by side, with 20 PVC colours, stair nosings and acoustic wall panels.

Materials

Which material suits your staircase and floor?

For staircase renovation and floors I work with four materials: PVC slabs, rigid PVC, laminate (HPL/CPL) and solid oak. Each material has its own look and its own strengths, from sound absorption to scratch resistance. I only work with quality materials from brands such as Douwes Dekker, K-Stairs and MexForm.

You can often choose the same material for the floor as for the staircase, so the two connect seamlessly. The right choice depends on the condition of your staircase, the floor, your style and how intensively the staircase is used. That is why we look at the materials in real life during the free advice visit, in your own home. Has your staircase already been renovated with overlay treads and would you like a different colour? Then I can give the overlay treads a new colour with interior film.

PVC slabs (glued PVC)

Extra large, thin and flexible strips of PVC that I glue directly onto the existing treads, finished with an aluminium nosing profile. The ideal choice if you want the staircase to flow seamlessly into a PVC floor. A 0.55 mm top layer with an anti-slip texture, AC5 wear rating and a 15 year manufacturer's warranty for domestic use.

Advantages

  • A seamless result without visible joins
  • The best sound absorption
  • Completely waterproof

Disadvantages

  • The subfloor must be perfectly smooth and level beforehand
  • Sensitive to scratches from sharp sand

Rigid PVC (SPC overlay treads)

Hard, ready-made overlay treads with a mineral core (Stone Plastic Composite) and an integrated nosing. Rigid PVC combines the comfort of PVC with the sturdiness of a hard floor. Use class 33 (AC5), a 0.55 mm top layer, phthalate-free and a 15 year manufacturer's warranty for domestic use.

Advantages

  • Very dimensionally stable, does not warp
  • Highly wear-resistant under intensive use
  • Naturally good slip resistance

Disadvantages

  • The thicker treads need a precise finish at the stringers
  • Slightly more expensive to buy

Laminate (HPL/CPL)

Overlay treads with a sturdy HDF core and a very hard synthetic resin top layer. I work with MexForm: a 0.6 mm CPL top layer, AC4 wear rating and a 12 year manufacturer's warranty on the top layer of the overlay treads and risers. Treads, risers and stringers can come in the same colour, in wood and stone decors.

Advantages

  • Very scratch and wear-resistant, even against stiletto heels
  • Very true-to-life wood and stone decors
  • Good value for money

Disadvantages

  • Sounds a little hollow underfoot
  • Less moisture-resistant at the joins

Solid wood (oak)

For the most natural and luxurious look, solid oak is the best choice. Wood lives and gives your home instant character and warmth. After years an oak staircase can be sanded and treated again, and it can be oiled in countless shades.

Advantages

  • A unique, luxurious look
  • Can be sanded and treated again after years
  • Can be oiled in countless shades

Disadvantages

  • Needs periodic maintenance with oil or lacquer
  • Moves slightly with air humidity
  • The most expensive choice

The PVC stair covering comes in 20 modern colours, from a warm Boterkoek to a bold Bitterkoek with a stone texture. Treads and risers have a tangible relief, so they look and feel true to life. Stair nosings

Aluminium nosing profiles in six colours

For a PVC staircase renovation I always use aluminium nosing profiles of 14 x 43 mm. They protect the nosing against wear and give a crisp finish. The ridge on top works as an anti-slip strip and the front gets an inlay of the same PVC as your treads, so everything forms one whole. The profiles come in six colours.

Acoustic wall panels

Acoustic wall panels in 8 oak colours

Acoustic wall panels made of oak slats on sound-absorbing felt, sound class A. Each panel measures 280 x 60 cm, is made of FSC wood and felt from recycled PET bottles, from € 69.00 per panel. They work on walls and ceilings, and I often match the colour to your floor or staircase.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

That depends on the condition of your staircase, the surrounding floor, your style and how intensively the staircase is used. PVC slabs absorb the most sound, rigid PVC is the most stable, laminate is the most scratch-resistant and solid oak gives the most luxurious look. During the free advice visit we look together at what suits you best.
PVC slabs are thin, flexible strips that I glue directly onto the treads, with a separate aluminium nosing profile. A rigid PVC overlay tread has a hard, stable composite core (SPC) with the nosing already built into the tread. Both come with a 15 year manufacturer's warranty for domestic use.
PVC slabs and rigid PVC overlay treads come with a 15 year manufacturer's warranty for domestic use. The MexForm laminate overlay treads and risers carry a 12 year manufacturer's warranty on the CPL top layer.
Yes. If your staircase has already been renovated with overlay treads and you would like a different colour, I can cover the overlay treads with interior film in a new colour. So there is no need to replace the treads. During the free consultation I check the condition of the treads and show you the designs.
Yes, that is often possible. For example, you can combine the rigid PVC stair tread in the colour Honing with the matching Douwes Dekker PVC floor in straight plank or herringbone. The staircase and floor then flow seamlessly into each other.
No. The 0.55 mm top layer has an anti-slip texture and the aluminium nosing profile has a tangible ridge on top to prevent slipping. Rigid PVC also has naturally good slip resistance.
Yes. I bring the latest samples and collections to the free advice visit, including the nosing profiles and acoustic wall panels. That way you can see in your own home, in your own light, which colour really fits.
