A calm home starts with less reverberation
Acoustic panels reduce echo because the felt behind the oak slats absorbs sound waves instead of reflecting them; the panels I fit have sound absorption class A. Each panel measures 280 x 60 cm, there are eight oak colours and prices start at € 69.00 per panel. I mount them on walls or ceilings, without your wall needing to be plastered first.
Why does a room echo?
Echo, or reverberation, occurs when sound is not absorbed but keeps bouncing off hard, smooth surfaces. The sound then lingers in the room for a moment. Voices sound hollow, a conversation at the table becomes tiring and the television ends up louder than necessary.
You see this more and more in modern homes. Think of a PVC, laminate or tiled floor, large windows, bare walls, an open-plan kitchen and few soft furnishings. A stairwell often echoes a lot too, because sound travels up and down via the hard stairs and walls.
A new hard floor can make the effect stronger. If you have just replaced carpet with PVC or laminate, you often notice straight away that the room sounds different. Acoustic panels are then a perfect addition: you keep the benefits of your new floor and take the echo out.
How acoustic panels dampen sound
An acoustic panel consists of oak slats on a thick backing of sound-absorbing felt. Sound passes between the slats and is absorbed by the felt, instead of bouncing back into the room. The result is less reverberation and a calmer, more comfortable space.
The panels I fit have sound absorption class A. That is the highest class in the A to E scale that indicates how much sound a material absorbs. So you get a wall that looks good and genuinely improves the acoustics at the same time.
How many panels you need depends on the size of the room and the number of hard surfaces. One clad wall often makes a clear difference already. In a large, open space a second wall or part of the ceiling can help as well. I look at that together with you in your home.
The panels in brief
These are the key facts at a glance:
- Size: 280 x 60 cm per panel
- Sound absorption class A
- Oak slats made from FSC-certified wood
- Felt made from recycled PET bottles
- Suitable for walls and ceilings, glued or screwed
- Prices from € 69.00 per panel
Eight oak colours
You choose from eight colours: light oak, light oak with grey felt, rustic oak, walnut oak, light walnut, smoked oak, grey oak and deep black oak. Light oak gives a fresh, Scandinavian feel. Walnut and smoked oak feel warm and luxurious. Deep black oak suits a bold or industrial interior.
I often match the colour of the panels to your floor or staircase. Because I also lay floors and renovate stairs, I can see straight away which combination works best together.
Where you can fit them
Acoustic panels work anywhere sound lingers. In Harderwijk, for example, I clad an entire dining room wall with oak slats on black felt. Other places where they come into their own:
- The living room, behind the sofa or around the television
- The bedroom, as a headboard wall
- A home office or meeting room
- A stairwell, a shop, a restaurant or a bar
Finish it off with accessories that fit onto the slats: a coat hook, a wine bottle holder sold in pairs or a wall shelf of 36 or 52 cm.
Installation and maintenance
Your wall does not need to be perfectly smooth. If it is not completely flat or slightly damaged, the panels cover it neatly, so you do not need to have it plastered first. The panels are lightweight and I fix them with mounting adhesive or screws, on the wall or ceiling. I cut them to size so they fit precisely around windows, doors and corners.
Maintenance is minimal. The panels attract little dirt and you keep them dust-free with a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush or a feather duster.
