A new look without demolition
If your kitchen is still technically sound and you mainly want a different look, wrapping it with interior film is usually the smartest choice; if units are damaged or the layout no longer suits the way you live, replacing it is better. When wrapping, I apply high-quality film over your existing fronts, with no paint, dust or demolition. Your kitchen stays in place and gets a completely new look.
What is kitchen wrapping?
Kitchen wrapping means that your existing kitchen fronts, panels and possibly other surfaces are covered with high-quality interior film. The film is robust, scratch-resistant and water-repellent, and feels true to life. Your kitchen gets a new colour or decor, while the units, the interior fittings and the appliances simply stay where they are.
No paint, dust or demolition is involved. You can keep using your kitchen and nothing needs to be thrown away. Because you reuse existing materials, wrapping is also a sustainable choice.
The work does call for craftsmanship. Film has to be applied tightly around edges and corners, without air bubbles or visible seams. With more than 25 years of experience in interior joinery, I work with the same precision as on a piece of made-to-measure furniture.
When wrapping is the best choice
Wrapping is a smart solution when the problem is mainly the look. For example when:
- Your units and hinges are still sturdy and in good order
- The layout of your kitchen still works well
- You find the colour or decor dated
- You do not want demolition, dust and a kitchen that is out of action for a long time
One important condition: the surface must be completely flat. Film follows every irregularity, so the fronts must be smooth and undamaged.
When replacing makes more sense
Wrapping is not a miracle cure. In some situations I will honestly advise you to replace the kitchen:
- Fronts or units are swollen from moisture or have edges coming loose
- The surface is damaged and can no longer be made flat
- The layout no longer suits the way you cook and live
- Units, drawers or hinges are worn out
Film makes a kitchen beautiful, but it does not turn a broken kitchen into a sturdy one. I always assess that at your home first.
Which designs are available
The choice of interior film is wide. The four main groups are:
- Wood look: from warm oak to sleek walnut, true to life in look and feel
- Concrete look: an industrial feel without the weight of real concrete
- Leather look: a refined, warm look for fronts and panels
- Solid colours: any colour, from matt to high gloss
So you can turn a white high-gloss kitchen into a matt black one, or give dark fronts a light wood look.
If you choose a wood look, you can match the shade to your floor or staircase. That way kitchen, floor and stairs form one calm whole.
What else you can wrap
Interior film is not just for kitchens. I also apply it to wardrobes, doors, staircases, furniture and window sills. That lets you bring a whole room into one style. Think of kitchen fronts and interior doors in the same wood decor, or a sideboard whose colour matches your new floor.
Because I also lay floors and renovate stairs, I look beyond the kitchen alone. I make sure the overall picture is right.
Wrapping is handy in a business premises, shop or office too. There is no building disruption involved, so work simply carries on.
Caring for wrapped fronts
Wrapped fronts are easy to maintain. You clean them with a microfibre cloth and a mild cleaner. Avoid scouring products and scouring pads, and the film will stay looking good for years.
Because the film is water-repellent, you can simply wipe away splashes around the worktop and hob. Do wipe up spills quickly and dry the fronts after cleaning, so no water is left standing along the edges. Even a scratch-resistant film lasts longest if you keep sharp objects from scraping along it.
