Stair lighting: what do you need to know?

From warm or cool white to sensors and the power point under your stairs.

Light on every tread, exactly when you need it

Stair lighting is LED lighting along your treads that makes your stairs safe and atmospheric in the evening; I usually fit it on closed staircases on the ground floor, up to a maximum of 16 treads, and there must be a power point under the stairs. I only work with dynamic stair lighting: each tread lights up by itself as soon as you start climbing, in cool white or warm white light.

What is dynamic stair lighting?

Dynamic stair lighting is smart LED lighting that switches on and off smoothly and automatically, tread by tread, using sensors. Step onto the bottom of the stairs and the lighting comes on ahead of you, one tread after another. Once you are at the top, it gently fades out again. The same happens the other way round when you walk down.

So you never have to search for a switch in the dark. That is pleasant when you come downstairs at night, and it turns your staircase into a real eye-catcher in your home.

If you would rather not have sensors, we will discuss together which control suits you best. Sensors do make it easiest, though: you do not have to do anything and the light only comes on when it is needed.

Cool white or warm white?

I supply dynamic stair lighting in cool white or warm white light. Which colour looks best depends mainly on your interior:

  • Warm white gives a soft, cosy glow and suits wood-look treads and warm floors
  • Cool white looks crisp and bright and suits a modern interior, light treads or a concrete look
  • If you are unsure, look at the lighting you already have in your hallway or living room
  • With dynamic lighting you can also set the colour temperature yourself

Also consider the colour of your treads. Light falls differently on a dark staircase than on light wood-look treads. That is why I show you examples during my visit, and we look together at what works best with your stairs and floor.

Everything can be set to your liking

Dynamic stair lighting is dimmable and can be fully tuned to the way you want it. You set the brightness, the warmth of the light and the speed at which the treads switch on and off. Prefer a soft glow to bright light at night? You simply set it that way.

The lighting uses modern LED strips. They are very energy-efficient and last a long time, so you do not need to worry about power consumption.

Are your stairs suitable?

Whether stair lighting is possible on your staircase depends on a few points. I check them during the technical inspection at your home:

  • It usually concerns a closed staircase on the ground floor
  • It works on existing, new and renovated staircases
  • The staircase has a maximum of 16 treads
  • There is a power point under the stairs

If there is no power point yet, I will discuss with you what is needed before the lighting can be fitted.

Combine it with your staircase renovation

The best moment for stair lighting is during a staircase renovation. The stairs are being fitted with new treads and risers anyway, and I can build the lighting in neatly straight away. On closed staircases on the ground floor, that is possible in most cases with PVC, rigid PVC and laminate.

Already have a lovely staircase? I can add stair lighting to an existing staircase too, as long as it meets the conditions above.

Safety and atmosphere in one

Stair lighting is more than a mood setter. A staircase where you can see every tread clearly is simply safer, especially in the evening and at night. Together with aluminium nosings with an anti-slip rib, or the anti-slip texture of rigid PVC and laminate, you get stairs that look good and feel secure underfoot.

Want to complete the picture? Consider a made-to-measure handrail too, for example the sleek 50 x 20 mm model in RAL 9005 matt black.

See the effect in your own home

Curious what stair lighting would look like on your staircase? I visit you free of charge and without obligation, check whether your stairs are suitable, look at where the power point is and show you examples of warm and cool white light.
